In a secret research institute where Kurchatov (a famous scientist, the father of the Soviet atomic bomb) works, radiation counters stop registering the background radiation. First one meter fails, then another, until absolutely everything in the whole building fails. Kurchatov begins to suspect that this is a conspiracy of Western spies.
